In this episode, we continue our Emerging Wine Regions series and explore several states producing wines off the beaten path in the United States. First,  interviews Master Sommelier  about the wines produced across Michigan. Madeline is famously the first American woman to pass the Master Sommelier exam, and has witnessed the Michigan wine industry develop since she began her career in the 1970s in Detroit. Then, Chris speaks with , wine journalist and author of the Classic Wine Library volume, The Wines of Southwest U.S.A., about the exciting and unexpected wines being grown in Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, and Colorado. For over 35 years, Master Sommelier Madeline Triffon has directed wine programs and events in the Metro Detroit area. She was the second woman in the world to pass the Master Sommelier exam and has mentored dozens of service professionals; she enjoys nothing more than watching them grow and excel. 

In 2011, Madeline signed on as the in-house Master Sommelier for Plum Market, a full-service grocery and specialty retailer in Southeastern Michigan and Metro Chicago. Madeline directs wine tasting events, hand selects wines for in-store and online retail sales, and serves as a corporate wine educator.

Madeline is a Chairman Emeritus of the American Chapter of the Court of Master Sommeliers and has also served as Scholarship Chair. In 2012, Champagne Krug awarded her a Lifetime Achievement Award for exceptional achievement in wine service, education and hospitality.


Jessica Dupuy is a wine and spirits columnist for Texas Monthly magazine and Forbes.com. Her latest book, The Wines of Southwest U.S.A., a part of the Classic Wine Library, covers the emerging American wine regions in Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado. Jessica has also covered food trends for various publications throughout her career and is the author of Uchi: The Cookbook, The Salt Lick Cookbook: A Story of Land, Family and Love, Jack Allen’s Kitchen Cookbook, The United Tastes of Texas and The United Tastes of the South through Southern Living, and Tex-Mex: Traditions, Innovations, and Comfort Foods from Both Sides of the Border with Atlanta-based chef Ford Fry.

She is a Diploma candidate for the Wine and Spirits Educational Trust, a Certified Sommelier through the Court of Master Sommeliers, and a Certified Specialist of Wine and Spirits through the Society of Wine Educators.

Paula is the founder and owner of Rocks + Acid, the mission-based wine shop and tasting room opening this spring in Chapel Hill, NC.

Prior to establishing her business, Paula was the Beverage Director for the Fearrington House Inn and Fearrington Village in Pittsboro, NC. She also spent two years as a senior sommelier at Eleven Madison Park in New York City, during which time the restaurant received the Outstanding Service award from the James Beard Foundation. 

Paula is an award-winning sommelier and wine educator and has been recognized by Wine Enthusiast as one of five Filipino and Filipino-American Sommeliers Changing the Narrative in the United States.
